<h2 id="my-surfskate-journey-in-stockholm">My Surfskate Journey in Stockholm</h2>
<p>It all began after <a href="/surfskate/surfskate">a transformative summer in Sagres, Portugal in 2022</a>, immersed in the surf culture.</p>
<p>Upon returning to Stockholm, I realized I wanted to bring a piece of that wave-catching thrill to my city life, and thus, I bought my first surfskate. While cruising through the streets of Södermalm, someone shouted “Is that a surfskate?”. That was <a href="https://www.instagram.com/swedishblend">Fredrik</a>, an enthusiast like myself, who had noticed the board, and who was running a LinkedIn chat group for surfskaters. This led to the creation of Surfskate Stockholm.</p>
<p>I initiated a Facebook group, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/surfskatestockholm">‘Surfskate Stockholm,’</a> which has since bloomed into a network of over 300 passionate members! This project is driven by our united love for the sea and surf brought onto the urban landscape of Stockholm.</p>
<h2 id="what-surfskate-stockholm-is-all-about">What Surfskate Stockholm is all about</h2>
<p>Living miles away from the ocean shouldn’t dampen your surf spirit. Surfskate Stockholm seeks to fill that void by being a hub where surfskaters connect, share tips, and hone their skills regardless of the city’s landlocked reality.</p>
<p>Whether you’re looking to perfect your maneuvering skills or just crave the camaraderie of fellow skaters, our Saturday Sessions at <a href="https://hogdalenskate.se/">Highvalley Skateworld in Högdalen</a> are your oasis of the concrete waves.</p>
<p>And for those looking to explore more, our Skatepark Safari will introduce you to fresh, exciting skate terrains every week.</p>
<h2 id="building-a-community">Building a community</h2>
<p>What started as a single shout on the street has become a thriving community fueled by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/surfskatestockholm">our Facebook group</a> and <a href="https://instagram.com/surfskatestockholm">Instagram account</a>. Our platforms offer a space for videos, discussions, and shared experiences.</p>
<p>The in-person meetups (every Saturday 12pm at <a href="https://hogdalenskate.se/">Highvalley Skatepark in Högdalen</a>) offer real-time tips, tricks, and a chance to forge lifelong friendships on four wheels.</p>
<p>The community is built non-profit by a bunch of driven enthusiasts (Swedish: “eldsjälar”, “fire souls” a word sorely missing in English). One person in particular stands out, the amazing <a href="https://www.instagram.com/hi.melissamj/">Melissa</a>, who is relentlessly pushing our growth, skills, and creativity.</p>

<p>In July, me and Maiya visited <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagres_(Vila_do_Bispo)">Sagres</a>, a small surf resort on the Algarve coast of Portugal. Looking at longboards in the <a href="https://sagresnatura.com/surf-shop/">Sagres Natura surf shop</a>, the clerk explained what a “surfskate” was, a skateboard made to emulate wave surfing (basically a wider longboard with really soft trucks). I had never heard of this before and got really intrigued.</p>
<p>Back home, I wanted to get a surfskate board, and eventually found <a href="https://www.decathlon.se/p/304787-130017_longboard-surfskate-carve-540-bird.html">a cheap beginner’s board at Decathlon</a>:</p>
